What is Orthokeratology?

Orthokeratology is commonly shortened as Ortho-K.

Ortho-K is the only non-surgical that can provide you 20/20 vision without the use of corrective lenses during the day. So how does Ortho-K work? Ortho-K is a term which refers to the reshaping or altering of the cornea shape which helps to adjust your vision and gives you the luxury of not requiring corrective lenses during the day.

The Ortho-k lenses work by flattening the center of the cornea, which creates a change in how light is bent as it enters the eye. Ortho-k lenses are worn overnight to flatten the cornea, then removed during the day. These overnight lenses are rigid, gas-permeable lenses that are sturdy enough to reshape the cornea, but also allow oxygen through so your eye stays healthy.

Who should get Ortho-K?

Ortho-K requires suitability to be checked, as Ortho-K isn't always the right option for everyone. Ortho-K provides you the ability to enjoy your lifestyle without the need for contact lenses or glasses during the day. We often find young adults, or people who have active lifestyles and enjoy things such as sport, and fitness benefit from Ortho-K lenses. Ortho-K is also highly valuable for children, or teenagers who need help to slow down their myopia (near-sightedness) progression. We often find parents find comfort in Ortho-K lenses for their children to help them live their life to the fullest during the day without having to worry about glasses or contact lenses.

Is Ortho-K Safe?

Ortho-K is a completely safe treatment so long as the patient is being monitored regular and takes care of the lenses and their eyes. Patients can sometimes experience wateriness, agitation or redness when waking up. This is a normal reaction as the liquids within our eyes provide an exchange of nutrients and the use of lenses can sometimes cause them discomfort or dryness.
